Summer Camp 2022

Mr. D's Music Club award-winning summer camps are back for 2022!!

We are thrilled to be offering COVID-safe in person summer camps again this year. We hope your kids can join us!

Mr. D's Approach to camp

Summer camp at Mr. D’s Music Club is all about music, art, dance, creativity, fun, and friends. Not to mention singing, dancing, acting, laughing, trying new things, performing, confidence-building and all-around silliness. We pride ourselves in offering children a stellar camp experience in the performing arts where every child shines.

Our philosophy embraces pop music across the

decades because:

  • Children can relate to great songs on an emotional level.

  • We celebrate music, singing, dancing, and acting

       as authentic forms of expression.

  • We gently introduce music from different genres

(classical, electronic, jazz, world music, etc.) with

the hope that this becomes a starting point for

your child to explore the vast musical universe.

  • Each camp has its own unique, fun, and (sometimes)

quirky theme. We intentionally set the themes to reflect the

week’s tone, but from there, anything goes. The songs vary from the

cool and unusual to the latest and greatest and they ALWAYS have soul!

Art, singing, dancing, and acting are intermixed each day and no two days are alike:

Music: We don’t always know which songs the kids will really enjoy singing, so we typically start out with more than we need and work our way through to the final cut. It’s fun to explore the songs with the kids, break them down, practice, and then really start to feel the emotions the songs evoke as we progress through the week.

Dance: Professional choreographers design and teach interactive dance routines to the kids centered around the week’s theme. Dance styles include hip hop, modern, jazz, salsa, etc.

Art: Throughout the week the kids work on several art projects that relate to the camp’s theme. The completed artwork will be displayed in the camp space for the Friday performance for attendees to view as they come to the big show!

Acting: Kids will play fun theater games, learn improv, act out scenes and get creative with

movement and storytelling. They will work in small groups to rehearse a skit for the Friday

performance. This year we will also have more opportunities for a few campers to work behind

the stage and learn how a production comes together as a team.

Performance: Friday is our performance day!! For now, we will plan to go back to

our previous approach and host a performance of all the arts on Friday afternoon.

This is subject to change based on covid and if that is necessary we will follow our

2021 format (morning and afternoon performances). Fingers crossed we can all

come together and celebrate our young artists as they showcase their artistic

talents and expressions, display their courage as they perform, and bring us

together in community.

Friday Pizza Party: The best part of camp for parents?? That's right, a pizza

party on Fridays! No need to pack lunch, just some snacks. Kids will have

cheese pizza, lemonade, and a popsicle. Additional fees apply.

After Care: Each day we offer aftercare from 3:30 - 5:30 pm. You can purchase

specific days or the entire week and save money. If you are sure of your needs

or something comes up last minute we offer family-friendly drop-in care as well.

During this time kids hang out, play games, read books, rehearse their dances and

skits and sometimes watch a movie together.

The kids are SUPER busy and will be tired, but very happy, at the end of

their camp day. They are building something - together - for you. We hope

you will join us and see what all the fuss is about.

2022 Oakland Camp Location:

In the Rockridge District

6013 Lawton Ave., Oakland, CA 94618

(where we've been for several years)

Mr. D's is by far the best summer camp I've sent my child to.
Not only does Mr. D offer relevant and contemporary musical experiences for children (they sing songs they like and can relate to!), but he's a joy to be around. My child gets to connect with her passion for the arts because Mr. D brings his passion and enjoyment everyday. There are so few experiences out there that offer this much life and connection. This camp is a breath of fresh air!

2022 Summer Camp Themes*

Off to the Movies (June 6 - 10)
We just can’t escape this theme, but only because there are so many amazing songs in movies. We all know the importance of a soundtrack, but do we ever truly appreciate how music pushes the emotions as the images flash by? Well, this week we do! Picking from new releases to oldies but goodies, we bring in a whole new song list each year celebrating the power of music in the cinema.

Feels like Summer (June 13 - 17)
School's out and summer is IN! Let's kick off the summer season in style by singing great pop songs, dancing our hearts out, creating summer-inspired art, and jumping into acting with abandon. It's the summer camp week of ALL summer camp weeks as we ease into the summer months of fun, friends, and adventures.

Cities (June 20 - 24)

The world tour begins here at Mr. D's Music Club! We'll be departing our amazing and eclectic Oakland to imagine and wonder what other cities in the world are like. Who knows where we'll end up, but it's sure to be an adventure of singing, dancing, creating, and acting all week long.

Space Camp (July 11 - 15)
Don't worry parents. Your kids won't accidentally blast off into space like the classic 1986 movie. BUT, they will blast off on a personal voyage of challenging their own boundaries and fears around taking a singing solo, acting in front of an audience, creating dance moves with their peers, and diving deep into creativity. Not quite the same as space exploration, but artistic exploration has its own rewarding experiences based on each participant's comfort level.

We are One (July 18 - 22)
This week we are celebrating Planet Earth and our connection to the natural world. We'll show our appreciation for our home planet through stellar art, graceful movements, nature-themed plays, and awesome pop songs that remind us of the natural places we each connect to in our own way. Mr. D's Music Club approaches each week with sustainability and environmentally friendly policies. This week those efforts will mean a little bit more to all of us as we connect as one to Planet Earth and all of its amazing beauty.

Color, Color, Color! (July 25 - 29)

Our world is vibrant! Color is often used to depict emotion, rhythm, thought, melody, movement, and voice. Imagine a week of pop songs that celebrate color, art that expresses shades, dancing that embodies expression, and acting that hones in on the topics that mean most to our youth. The week of Color, Color, Color! is all about the vibrancy that makes us different and the blending that keeps us connected.

Decades: The 70's (August 1 - 5)

This week we'll explore pop music from the 1970s! There will be tunes we all know and adore, but some not-so-familiar ones as well. We'll dive deep into the 70's art scene, culture, and fashion as we create, dance, and act throughout the week. Get ready to boogie!

*All themes subject to change as needed

Mr. D's staff were so kind and welcoming to my child. The camp days were full and busy, but not overwhelming. My daughter had all of the space and the structure to make friends very easily. She was encouraged to try something new (like acting and role playing in front others!) and felt comfortable enough to do so. She came home on the first day and described what it felt like to be acting out a funny skit in front of others, except no one laughed. I was concerned that she might be discouraged by a very natural and common interaction. Throughout the week, I didn't hear her express an ounce of defeat or discouragement though! I can only attribute that to wonderful staff who I know made her feel very safe to keep trying as a performer.
